I love hashtags. For both personal and business needs, it can help me quickly find what I’m looking for. If I need to reach a large regional audience, such as people located in Wilmington, North Carolina, I include #ilm in my tweet and people in the area who are following that hashtag will see my post. It’s a great way to broaden your reach and expand your community.

It’s also a great way to get involved in discussion that is of interest to your target audience. For example, if you have an online dog boutique, you could follow #dogs. Monitor what’s being said and respond whenever appropriate.

In the past, this hashtag was used almost exclusively for Twitter. But other social platforms have caught on and you can now seemingly use hashtags everywhere. Facebook, Intstagram, Pinterest … they all utilize this intuitive search functionality.

PS: The hashtag should not replace using keyword rich content in your posts. People can still search the old fashioned way – by entering regular terms into the search box.

What hashtags do you use the most?
